getting live in week 5

Posted Monday, April 18, 2011 by James Martinez
After disappointing back to back losses, the Corona Panthers frosh baseball team went back to their winning ways in week 5. Corona beat Long Beach Poly and swept Eastvale Roosevelt in a Big 8 league double header. The young prowling pack is now a respectable 10-2-1 thus far into the 2011 season.

Dakota Salazar threw 5 innings for the W against LB Poly. With the Corona starting pitching going deep into games the bullpen has had plenty of rest, allowing them to perform up to par. The defense was solidified by the outstanding catching of Derrick Robinson setting the defensive tone for the rest of the freshman Panthers.

The Corona bats came to life against LB Poly. 1bs JT Martinez and OF "Rad" Chad Lichtenwater each went 2-3 for the Panthers as Martinez added 2rbi and Lichtenwater had an rbi. When JT Martinez was asked about his day at the dish he replied " I'm getting lower on the ball and seeing it better". The Panthers scored 8 runs on their way to a solid all around victory.

Garret Lilly and Derrick Robinson never gave Roosevelt a chance last Sat. as each went 6 2/3 of an inning to get the wins for their team. Lilly pitching the first game with a mean streak was stingy giving up 2 hits 2 runs, both unearned. D. Robinson came in to get the final out.

Lilly also helped himself out goin 3-4 w/2 rbi and a run scored. D.Robinson and Michale Lang each had a pair of hits, with Lang getting an rbi. JT Martinez made his precense felt with a triple to the RF fence and later scoring. Corona won the game 4-2.

Derrick Robinson's performance on the mound in game 2 vs Roosevelt HS was nothing short of stellar. Robinson gave up 2 hits and did not allow a run in 6 2/3 of an inning adding 6 K's to his day for the win against Eastvale Roosevelt. Jacob Acebedo came in to get the final out and put the nails in the coffin for the save.

The single run was manufactured by the outstanding running ability of Sergio Salgado and timely quality at-bats provided by his teamates. Thee end result being a bang bang play in Salgado stealing home with JT Martinez at the dish and picking up the walk.

This young Panther team proved to themselves they have what it takes to finish the season out on top of the Big 8, as they are now 6-0 in Big 8 league play. The Panthers play a JV ballclub. Binghampton HS from South Jordan, Utah on  4/21/11 before facing their cross-town rivals, the Santiago Sharks, this weekend on 4/23/11. Go Panther Pride and Performance!
